Binational Centers are English-Language-Teaching (ELT) and cultural institutes with strong ties to the US Department of State. The main pillars of Binational Center operations are quality English language instruction, US-study orientation and services under the EducationUSA banner, cultural programs, and libraries open to the community and focused on information resources about the U.S.
CTJ is a Brasilia English language teaching powerhouse and currently the largest Binational Center in Brazil, with some 17,000 students and over 250 teachers. Founded in 1963, first as a library, and then expanded into an ELT institute, it now comprises six branches, several outposts at private elementary and high schools, a variety of on-site corporate/government programs, and a growing distance learning operation (Thomas Online)
CTJ is recognized locally, nationally, and internationally for distinguished expertise in English language teaching, and as a not-for-profit organization, it is able to invest significantly in faculty professional development. CTJ also organizes the annual CTJ TEFL Seminar, a well-regarded and attended professional conference within the English language teaching profession in Brazil. CTJ also offers a full schedule of free art exhibits, concerts, and other arts-and-culture programs open to the community throughout the year.
